BUILDING A HOMEMADE FM REPEATER WITH A RASPBERRY PI, RPITX AND RTL-SDR DONGLE

A radio repeater is usually a radio tower that receives weak signals from handheld, desktop or other radio, and rebroadcasts the same signal at a higher power over a wide area at a different frequency. This allows communications to be extended over a much greater area.

Repeaters are generally made from expensive professional grade radio equipment, however ZR6AIC has been experimenting with creating an ultra low cost repeater out of a RTL-SDR and Raspberry Pi. In his system the RTL-SDR dongle is set up to receive a signal on the 70 cm (420 – 450 MHz) amateur radio band, and then retransmit it using Rpitx on the 2M (144 – 148 MHz) amateur radio band. He also adds a 2M low pass filter to the output of the Raspberry Pi to keep the signal clean.

you can best the receiving technique with minor modifications and devices, the use of an audio adapter for the mobile phone in order to split the microphone and headphones in order to reinsert the sound from the headphone into the microphone (note that an additional modification might be required with resistances to overcome audio bug due to various Android OS smartphone or various versions or standard audio)

In this tutorial I will take you through the steps to build your very own Raspberry Pi ADS-B receiver. This is probably more commonly known as a flight tracker as it has the ability to track flights within a 100-300-mile radius.

This setup does require an extra piece of equipment in order to work so I have listed all the required pieces of equipment below.  Take extra note of the TV dongle.

Raspberry Pi
4 GB SD Card (8 GB+ Recommended) or Micro SD Card if you’re using a Raspberry Pi 2 or B+
Ethernet Cord or Wifi dongle
Power Adapter
Mini DVB-T Digital TV USB Dongle

The software we use in this Raspberry Pi ADS-B receiver tutorial is supplied by flightaware. It is really simple to install and allows you start collecting that data in no time at all.

Probably the most complicated part of this tutorial is linking your Pi to flightaware. Sometimes it will be really easy and pick up the ADS-B receiver in no time other times it will take a while or manually need to be done.

It is important to note that if you setup a flight tracker and supply the data to flightaware they will upgrade your account to enterprise. An enterprise account is worth $90 bucks a month so you will make you money back in no time if you’re looking at just getting that account upgrade.

Timer code has been updated and is now accurate. Timers were never accurate in Allstar code prior to this!
The weather condition and temperature have been added to the time routine.
DTMF pass through has been simplified and now works.
A problem in the wireless code has been corrected.
A CPU turbo mode script has been added.
